Tozer Seeds America: The Innovative Company Behind The Hot New Veggie Kalettes™
Santa Maria, Calif.; February 23, 2015- Tozer Seeds America is
the proud company behind Kalettes™, the brussels sprouts and kale
hybrid, which have been named a top food trend for 2015.
Tozer Seeds America is the U.S. branch of Tozer Seeds, the
largest independent and family-owned vegetable breeding company in
the UK. Tozer Seeds specializes in breeding, production and
distribution of quality vegetable seed. In 2008, Tozer Seeds
expanded their distribution and sales operation to the U.S. and
opened an office in Santa Maria, Calif.
"At Tozer Seeds America, we are proud of our European heritage
and the quality of the products we sell," said Kraig Kuykendall,
sales manager of Tozer Seeds America. "Tozer Seeds is known
for their vision and quality, innovative product lines, and we are
very pleased to offer these great varieties to our U.S.
In 2013, Tozer Seeds won third place in the Fruit Logistica
Innovation Awards for Flower Sprout®, which is the name used for
Kalettes in the U.K. This brussels sprouts and kale hybrid
was successfully launched by Tozer Seeds America in the U.S. last
year. The name change to Kalettes was partially due to the
popularity of kale in the U.S. Kalettes are the product of over 15
years of research and development and were created through
traditional hybridization. Tozer Seeds does not produce any
GMO varieties and strives to ensure that all of their seeds are
healthy, pure and have the highest possible germination.
Tozer Seeds puts emphasis on developing new and innovative
products with excellent flavor and good field performance. In
the past 70 years Tozer Seeds has achieved many notable firsts such
as the first to devise a method for screening lettuce varieties for
mildew resistance. They were also the first to produce commercial
F1 hybrid celery and F1 hybrid parsnip.
"Innovation has been at the heart of Tozer Seeds since their
inception in 1939," said Kuykendall. "Tozer Seeds has always
allowed their breeders time for 'blue sky projects.' This
enables them to develop their own ideas with novel projects and
Kalettes are a product of the company's innovation."
