Third Annual Katie’s Krops Camp Coming in July
Pelion, SC; March 2015-It all started with a girl and the
40-pound cabbage she grew. Katie's Krops, a non-profit focused on
empowering kids to plant vegetable gardens and donate the harvest
to the underserved in their communities, will hold the Third Annual
Katie's Krops Camp at the WP Rawl headquarters in Pelion, SC.
In 2008 eight-year-old Katie Stagliano brought a tiny cabbage
seedling home from school as part of the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade
Cabbage Program. She tended to her cabbage and cared for it
until it grew to an amazing 40 pounds. Knowing her cabbage was
special, she donated it to a soup kitchen where it helped feed over
275 people. Moved by the experience of seeing how many people
could benefit from the donation of fresh produce to soup kitchens,
Katie decided to start vegetable gardens and donate the harvest to
help feed people in need-and Katie's Krops was born.
Today, Katie's Krops has more than 60 gardens in over 25 states
and benefits those in need spanning the country from Hawaii to
Maine and Washington to Florida.
After hearing Katie speak at a produce industry show in the
summer of 2012, Ashley Rawl, Director of Marketing at WP Rawl knew
he wanted to help Katie fulfill her dream of having a garden in
every state. At the end of 2012, WP Rawl made a donation coming
from sales of the company's Nature Green's kale that is sold in
grocery stores across the country. He also wanted to host a camp
for Katie's Krops grantees where they could learn from one another,
and the Katie's Krops Camp concept was born.
The third annual camp will come to fruition on July 8-11, 2015
and each year has been successful and different: year one brought
the grantees to do a Katie's Krops Dinner in Columbia, where they
fed a warm, healthy and free meal to the underserved from
vegetables they themselves harvested; year two brought them to the
local Harvest Hope Food Bank, where they built a raised bed
vegetable garden for them to grow their own vegetables, which the
food bank has kept up. This summer's project is yet undisclosed,
but the 16 campers, including Katie, will once again participate in
a community service project.
All Katie's Krops grantees had the opportunity to apply for this
camp, but only 15 lucky winners were chosen to attend in 2015. The
three-day camp not only rewards them, but will also teach them
about growing practices, budgeting and giving back to their
communities. It also gives them the opportunity to get to know
their peers, learn from Katie herself as well as meet special
celebrity guests, including Monique Coleman, formerDisney's High
School Musicalstar who is currently partnering with WP Rawl to
promote eating more greens through the company's Nature's Greens
"It is not every day that we are able to get various members of
the Katie's Krops family together, so I am very excited and
thankful for this opportunity," remarked Katie, 16. "It has been a
wonderful experience to meet our grantees in person, to learn from
them and further empower them to grow a healthy end to hunger in
their communities. I am so grateful to WP Rawl for making my dreams
a reality by hosting and sponsoring the camp and supporting our
"The first time I met Katie, I knew I wanted to help her cause,"
said Ashley Rawl, vice president of Sales, marketing and product
development for WP Rawl. "I started thinking of ways we could help
her empower other kids to do the same thing she is already doing.
Katie's Krops Camp was born on that day and I am so pleased to be
talking about it on the eve of year three."
